IPE/BC believes that all students should be included in their neighbourhood public schools and provided with the support they need. The BC government has a laudable policy statement on inclusion and the requirement to ensure “that students with disabilities and diverse abilities have equitable access to learning opportunities for achievement, and the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of their educational programs.” However, for many students and their families/caregivers the reality is at odds with the policy commitment. Chronic underfunding of public education has led to a dire lack of necessary supports, educational assistants and specialist teachers, appropriate learning settings, and more. IPE/BC has been speaking out on this issue, and strongly supports the many groups, organizations and individuals striving to ensure that meaningful inclusion becomes a reality for all students in BC’s public schools.
